Have you ever studied graphic design? Or are you self-taught? Is it worth to get a degree in graphic design? Or does knowledge worth more?

I never followed any studies. The closest thing I did art-related was 2 yours of art school when I was 8 years old, I guess ... But that wasn't that big of deal, just make a figure out of clay and when you are done make a drawing. Have you ever studied graphic design? 1f606

Everything I know about graphic design is self-taught.

I am a self-taught graphic designer. But I think going to a graphic school and getting a degree definitely makes a different Smile

I am self taught. Never had any kind of art classes in school.

What got me started in doing graphics on a computer came about when I bought my first computer, a Mac SE. I came across a program for it called Res Edit which made it possible to make changes to the systems graphic interface. I really got into it and ended up changing the systems icons, window frames, start up screens and any other graphic element I could find. Then they came out with a program called Kaleidoscope which allowed you to change the windows, icons, etc. in a much more streamlined method.

From there I was hooked and that is why today, I like doing ranks and other graphic elements for forums. Doing the animation stuff is fun for me because I like building stuff.

DustyBones, your story is interesting, thanks for sharing! Very Happy I don't even remember what got me started, probably the game I started to play years ago. Have you ever studied graphic design? 1987004402

I'm mostly self-taught, to be honest I don't think I ever looked at any guides ; I just winged it. xD The earliest I can remember is playing around with Macromedia Fireworks 8 and making horrid avatars. After that I got into making animated images -- userbars -- and I learned a good chunk of how gifs work, or animation in general I guess lol. I'm not that great, but I have a reasonable amount of experience to make somewhat nice looking images. pirat

I'm self taught too, probably too young to actually be off spending money or even being able to take those classes XD
It mostly started with me doing art on MS Paint... then after a few years I got GIMP and My Paint and was able to quickly figure out things there. But I'm excited to learn from here ^^

Dusty it's funny how you mentioned ResEdit and Kaleidoscope that's what got me into editing the icons, but with MacPaint to change colors and such, i didn't even know about Photoshop back then. Once i found out about Photoshop tried and said for get this, it's too hard. A few years later, i had to to a booster for my kids school and tried photoshop again and i got the basics from there, it's all i use. As you can tell i still playing around with it and still trying to fully understand it.

Yea, I loved those 2 programs, probably my most favorite programs ever.

I wish they currently had something like Kaleidoscope for windows, I'd be spending most my time doing that.

I'm self-taught. But I'm on and off when it comes to gfx.
Sometimes when I have a lot of time, I explore tutorials online on how to improve my gfx level. However, I cannot have that much time since I am already working.

Good thing this summer, I'm in a vacation, so I have another time to explore once again.
