Inkscape let you play with the shapes you created. There are different path options that let you merge, cut, cut parts of the object. The options are the following represented with some samples.

Union Ctrl++

Inkscape - Path options Bandicam%202016-06-30%2012-36-20-156
Difference CTRL+-
The overlapped part (upper object) is removed.
Inkscape - Path options Bandicam%202016-06-30%2012-36-46-525
Interselection CTRL+*
Leaves the area where the 2 objects overlapped.
Inkscape - Path options Bandicam%202016-06-30%2012-36-55-297

All the options work with paths drawn with Pen Tool too.

I wouldn't say it's better, it's just different.
You can do the same in Inkscape and in PS, but since you got used to PS already, it would take longer time to get used to Inkscape. Same for me, I prefer to use PSP most of the time due to time issues. Very Happy

However, if you need vector files or something that might need to be scaled up in the future it's better to use Inkscape. If you work with large files from the beginning, and just resize in the end when you provide the requester the final images, you're fine. Smile
(Also, if you don't want to learn another software in the future, but you're sure you'll work with vectors, you can think about learning Adobe Illustator. That's more known and widespread software for vectors.)
